My final advert
After rattling my brains and rejecting many of the ideas it presented, we eventually agreed upon an advert.
I did the finishing touches yesterday and I hope it comes out alright and can fit in the CD
I made a short video and called it The Playground.
I think it fits in with our "Bye Buy Childhood" campaign.

Industries taking advantage of minors
I think I should talk a little about my Vogue pictures.
I'll mention how the meaning of "dressing up" has evolved over the years.
I also want to mention how various industries take advantage of young children in order to gain attention and cause controversy.
A prime example would be the band Scorpions who released an album in 1976. The album was called Virgin Killer and the cover featured a completely nude 10 year old girl, Jaqueline. The girl is posing provocatively and her genitalia is subtly covered by imposed image of cracked glass. The cover caused quite a stir in many countries and was therefore banned in a number of nations.
For the bit about "dressing up" I'm gonna compare how children usually dress up to the Vogue Christmas issue. Nanzi :)

The adulteration of children in fasion
Here are some pictures from Witchery Kids new child clothing line. The way the children are "adultified" is quite subtle however there is a definite underlying "grown up" aura through out the campaign. Witchery Kids responded by saying that their line (designed for two- to nine-year-olds) is meant to be fun and playful, with "up to the minute adult trends styled for the smaller set," and that "the majority of feedback...regarding our campaign and product range has been very positive." I think that not only have the children been dressed to look like miniature adults they pose in model positions too...pouting, avoiding eye contact, looking board or lost and no smiling what so ever. It's easy to draw a parallel between this clothing campaign and the once in a Glamor magazine, the only difference is these are children. Since industrialization there has been this urgency put on children to grow up as fast as they can. what is worse is in every new generation the age of wanting to be more "grown up" is lowering. These children are between 6 and 9 years of age.

:D
Today, we will all gather together and finally put our research into one presentation!
I am very excited!
We still need to make 2 advertisements of our own and analyze one advertisement from any media.
I hope we will do some serious work today!

multimedia for our presentation
hello
I have done quite a lot of research and have found some very interesting multimedia clips that we can put into our power point presentation. The firts is a video clip (here's the link)
http://illegaladvertising.blogspot.com/2006/12/preview-children.html
This is about how children see what their perents do and they do the same. It has inspired me to focus one of my advertisments on this theme. It fascinates me how our older genertation has grown up as consumers and have passed a consumerist mindset on to us and the fact that we will do the same to our children.
Adverting is more serious and far-reaching than we actually realise. It dose not only affect us now but the true symptoms are clearly evident in our yonger generation, in fact this mindset becomes more entrenched as it is past down through genertaions with the constant reinforcement of this advertising.
The second meltimedia item we can put into our presentation is the Cat Steven song - 'Where do the children play?' It comments on how we have been affected by consumerism and makes us question how it is going to affect the generations to come.
http://tabs.ultimate-guitar.com/c/cat_stevens/where_do_the_children_play_crd.htm here's the link to the words of the song. We should play it to the class in our presentaion. Yeji, maybe you can play it on the electric piano and I on the giutar ( just an idea...the chords are on the website with the words of the song)
I will see you tomorrow!
Goodbye!

ADVERTISMENTS!
Here are some photos which I thought we can put in our powerpoint presentation :)
The more research I do, the more excitement yeji gets!
I got so many ideas in my head right now.
Don't forget, Nanzi and Jessica, that you are coming to my house on tuesday!
Please be prepared so that we can put our research together and start working on our advertisements.

:)
Just to clarify everything, I have asked Ms Orpen few questions today.
Somebody mentioned that our advertisements don't have to be done by first day of next term, however, Ms Orpen said that they actually are due for the first day of next term and they have to be saved in the CD with our powerpoint presentation.
After spending many hours researching about children and advertisements, I have finalized what I am going to do my oral on. I am going to compare the advertisements in the past with current advertisements (Nanzi has some old magazines at home.) I found the contrast between advertisements from two different time period very interesting. On the other hand, it made me feel sad to see how children are portrayed as sexual icons nowadays.
The second topic I will focus on is Bratz dolls. I will link this topic from my previous topic (how children are being sexualized in the advertisements) and talk about how small toys, such as Bratz dolls and Barbies, can influence children. After this topic, Nanzi will carry on with her topic which is closely related to mine.
I must say that I am really looking forward to this oral and I hope that our research will be worthwhile.

Thank you to the Technology "Nerds" for PVR!
Yesterday after school I hurried to Meadowridge Library to find books on Children in Adverting or psychological effects on children via media. I even looked through old magazines. I left with nothing.
Tonight I had a sudden wave of brilliance!
I remembered following this amazing documentary called Child of Our Time on BBC Knowledge last year. The documentary is hosted by the brilliant Professor Robert Winston. On days I couldn't watch, I'd record it with DSTV PVR.
Basically the show followed the lives of 25 different children that are born in the year 2000 in Britain; from the time they are born until they reach 20 years of age.
The show focuses on the question of "Are we born or are we made?"
Over the years the show covers different topics ranging from: personality developments, different parenting strategies, effects of absence or presence of a mom or dad on children, effects of technology, how children communicate etc.
Unfortunately I deleted all the series last year as my PVR memory was becoming full.
Then, as I was browsing the list of things I'd recorded and hadn't had time to watch; I came across an episode of Child of Our Time. This one was different to previous ones, as it was an episode with Child experts along with Professor Winston, discussing their findings on the show. Their main topic was "Is Childhood Under Threat?"
You cannot imagine the relief and victory I felt when I came across this recording! Phew!
I haven't gone through the whole recording yet as my mother ordered me to bed half way into the show. [Insert sad face]
Though what I did watch was extremely helpful. They discussed how the meaning of "play" has evolved as well as the advantages and many disadvantages of this evolution. for example children don't play outside as much as they used to a few years ago due to the advancement of technology. They also said that things like computers are an advantage for disabled children who can't participate in many outdoor activities and are housebound.
I'm looking forward to a date with my couch, television and notebook tomorrow. [Insert happy face]

Bratz dolls!
Today, I did my research on Bratz dolls and how people think about the way they are being portrayed in the commercials.
Someone asked if Bratz dolls are bad influence on little children.
I have been quite shocked by some comments people have made.
For example, someone said:
"Nope; they're just dolls; the same goes for videogames, movies, cartoons, and any other form of media. The problem lays with the parents, not the toys. "
"IF I SAW A GIRL WEARING STUFF LIKE BRATZ I DONT BLAME DOLLS I BLAME THE PARERENTS WHO DIDINT RAIZE THE CHILD WELL!"
So many people were actually blaming PARENTS for the bad influence.
However, there were also some people who thought that Bratz dolls can be a bad influence on little children as children want to dress up and put on make-up like Bratz dolls.

LOOK at this picture of bratz dolls. They are all wearing heels and make-up. Some of them are wearing mini-skirts. This is very inappropriate for the age range of children who play with Bratz dolls.
I really do believe that these dolls can affect children a lot. Children are still young and they cannot judge what is right or wrong. According to the American Psychological Association, children only gain the ability to differenciate commercials and regular programming at eight. It is clear that children at this age are lacking the ability to recognize and critically analyze the advertisements. Children under the age of 8 unconsciously might think that the Bratz dolls look is the target they are meant to aspire to.

Proffesional Views
For our project I think we should get a professionals' perspective on advertisements that are aimed at children and the effects.
For example we could contact a child psychologist and pre and primary school teachers.
2
I have came up with some ideas :)
As part of our research, i think it will be great to do a survey and draw a graph with it to see the trend.
Also, we can go to the children toy shops to see how some toys are not appropriate for young children.
We can discuss when we will meet up again on monday.

Day 1
This is the first day of our Advertising Project.
We chose to do our project specifically on how children are being advertised by the media as well as the effects of the media on their behaviour and development.
This week in English we watched a revealing documentary called Killing Us Softly 3 which gave us a new perspective on daily advertising. For example, how women, men and children were manipulate. What caught our attention the most was how children were being moulded into our modern society's expectations. This is where our inspiration began and our journey begins to explore the world of advertisement of children.Yeji & Nanzi
Unfortunately Jess wasn't with us today, but hopefully will join us soon. :)
